Our mission: to seek out hidden artistic, cultural and historic treasures...then develop and execute a plan to bring them alive and into the light!
The French Cable Station Museum - Orleans, MA
January 2019....Another mission begun!
In November 2018, we wrote and submitted a grant proposal to the Orleans Community Preservation Committee on behalf of The French Cable Station Museum, one of Orlean's most significant historic landmarks. Funding for our project was approved by the OCPC in January 2019, and at town meeting in May. Our work began in summer of 2019, and is progressing on schedule.
Project goals:
-Inventory, photograph, and apply new ID numbers to approximately 1500 pieces of equipment and spare parts.
-Digitally scan documents and letters dating from the beginning of the laying of the cable, named "Le Direct" in 1898, through both World War I and II and until the station ceased operation in 1959.
-Installation of new HVAC for improved climate control within the Museum.
-Provide cleaning and archival preservation of selected documents.
-Create an on-line database of the documents and equipment, accessible through the Museum website.
January 2021 update:
Over the summer of 2020 a new HVAC and dehumidification system was installed creating a safe environment for long term preservation of the Museum collection. We have recently added an online database of the Museum artifacts to the FCSM website and are currently awaiting approval by the OCPC for funding the creation of a small library / document storage area in the basement.
Covid-19 kept the Museum from opening last summer. Please consider making a contribution, or becoming a member to help offset the Museum's continuing operational expenses. Hopefully everything will re-open soon!
Stay well, and safe.
We are honored to have been offered the opportunity to help this truly unique museum which is a time capsule into the communication technology of the past. (Read more here)
Feb. 8, 2018....One mission accomplished!
In 2007, a collaboration was formed with photographer Rowland Scherman, Bob Korn Imaging, Inc. and Dave & Meri Hartford of Artworks! - all from Orleans, Massachusetts. The Rowland Scherman Project was established to catalog, digitally scan & print for exhibition, forty plus years of Mr. Scherman's life work.
The following statement was taken from one of the first posters we produced back in 2007:
“Rowland’s collection of historically significant portraits should be preserved and shared. Our goals are to produce selected images for sale, produce exhibits of his framed images to venues beyond our gallery / studio, and obtain public recognition for Rowland Scherman’s incredible life’s work behind the camera.”
Now, as a result of over 10 years of work, we have achieved those goals. Mr. Scherman is no longer an obscure, unknown photographer. His work has been seen by literally thousands of people at over 30 venues & people from all over the world have visited the website we produced. He has had numerous speaking engagements, radio and television interviews, and his work has been used as part of the curriculum at a university. His collection has become sought after, and has been acquired by U. Mass. Amherst. http://credo.library.umass.edu/
